A collection is an assembly of things, usually of the same kind, put together out of pleasure, curiosity or speculation. For this piece, the bookcase of an art collector was intervened. All the books were covered in white paper with the intention of hiding their identity and characteristics. Thus, the bookcase and its contents were turned into a formal object. In iconographic terms, the bookshelf itself is what gives the collector the authority to collect his curiosities (Collector I- 2010). During the process of intervention, certain images were selected from the books and then photocopied. 

A year later, the paper that covered the books was removed. Two books/memoirs were then created. The first one –which represents and functions as the “memory” of the collector– contains a series of the fragmented images previously selected and photocopied from the books. The process was inspired by William Burroughs’ cut up method. The photocopied images were cut up and glued onto pages of the book in a random search for new graphics that, at the same time, simulated the way memory works. 

The second book was made with the paper that was used to cover the books during a year. The traces of dust and sunlight show the passing of time that represents the memory of the intervention.

Over the years, the collector and his family moved and the bookcase was left behind. I was allowed to photograph “the memory” of the books on the bookshelf: as of that moment, a different kind of remembrance was being woven (Collector II- 2013) .
