Gallery: an archive of art and memory

During the months of the pandemic in Mexico City (2020), galleries and art spaces gradually closed their doors; we sensed that some would never reopen.  We artists had to search our spaces for materials and themes that caught our attention. I came across some boxes of dead files that I had given up for dead.

In the late 1980s, my mother and Lourdes Monjes opened a gallery that brought together many artists I would encounter in the future. The gallery was called Arte y Promoción (Art and Promotion). It opened its doors and attempted to insert itself into the complex world of galleries and contemporary art. Three years later, without success, it closed its doors.

Much of the silence of the pandemic allowed me to review and activate this archive.  My mother has completely lost her memory. So, folding an origami figure thousands of times, feeling the paper with each fold and understanding a movement that, through repetition, activates memory, was my way of reacting to these documents.

I dedicate this piece to Yolanda, Lourdes, and all the galleries that came to an end during the pandemic.
